DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA – Lauren Fleshman continued the strong showing of the Oregon Track Club Elite at the IAAF World Championships, running a strong 5000 meter race to place seventh in a time of 15:09.25 on Friday evening.
Running with the lead pack for 4400 meters of the race, Fleshman finished behind four Kenyan and two Ethiopian athletes. Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya, who won the 10,000 meters here, was also victorious in the 5000, winning with a time of 14:55.36.
“I have the speed that these girls have,” Fleshman said after the race. “I just don’t have the strength yet, that they have to be as comfortable (at the end of the race).
The 29-year-old Eugene resident’s performance here was impressive, considering that she was injured and unable to run at all the first three months of 2011. She did elliptical work and deep water running during that time, and resumed running in April.
Fleshman recently announced that she will run her first marathon in November at the New York City Marathon, and said she will begin marathon training later this month.
